Ibiza vs Marbella vs Barcelona:
Which is Best for Your Hen Party?

April 2025 12 min read By Make It Spain

Every group planning a hen party in Spain hits the same wall about three minutes into their research: Ibiza, Marbella, or Barcelona? It's one of those debates that can spiral fast — one bridesmaid swears by Ibiza, another's best friend had the time of her life in Barcelona, and someone's already sent a link to a Marbella villa that sleeps fourteen.

Here's the thing: all three are genuinely brilliant. But they're brilliant in very different ways. And picking the wrong one for your group is the kind of mistake you notice on night one when half the group wants to be in bed by 1am and the other half is still pre-drinking.

So let's settle it properly.

Ibiza: the one that goes hardest

If your group has been talking about this hen do for two years and someone's already promised it'll be "the best weekend of my life," Ibiza is probably the answer.

The nightlife here is — and this isn't an exaggeration — unlike anywhere else on earth. Pacha, Ushuaïa, Amnesia. These aren't just clubs; they're events, proper ones, with production budgets that make most festivals look modest. The DJs are the best in the world. The pool parties start at noon and keep going until you forget what time zone you're in.

"But Ibiza is more than the superclubs. San Antonio's sunset strip, the beach clubs along the west coast, hidden coves you genuinely can't find on Google Maps — there's a softer side to Ibiza that most people don't see because they never slow down long enough to look."

Who it's right for

The group that wants to go properly out. Big party energy, late nights, pool parties by day and superclubs by night. Also perfect if you've got a mixed-energy group — Ibiza is big enough and varied enough that the party animals and the more chilled members can each find their thing. See how we plan Ibiza hen parties.

Who should probably skip it

Groups where even one or two people don't drink, are pregnant, or are looking for something more cultural or romantic. Ibiza at full tilt can be overwhelming if that's not what you came for.

Marbella: the glamorous one

Marbella is where you go when the word "luxury" keeps coming up in the group chat. It's sun, it's glamour, it's beach clubs that look like the set of a perfume ad. Puerto Banús is absurd — in a brilliant way — with its superyachts parked along the boardwalk and restaurants where the wine list is longer than the food menu.

The vibe in Marbella is different to Ibiza. It's a bit more grown-up, a bit more "rosé by the pool at 2pm" and a bit less "we're still dancing at 7am." The hen parties here tend to be the ones with a gorgeous private villa, a day on a catamaran, a beach club reservation, a nice dinner, and then a proper night out in town. It flows beautifully as a format.

The beach clubs are a big part of the appeal — Ocean Club, Nikki Beach, Nobu Beach. Some of these require planning and proper reservations, especially in summer, but that's exactly what they're worth. A day at a Marbella beach club with your group, sun on your face and a bottle of cava on the way, is hard to beat.

Who it's right for

Groups who want to feel properly looked after — good food, beautiful settings, a bit of pampering alongside the party. Mid-to-high budget groups tend to get the most from Marbella. It's also brilliant for hen parties where the bride-to-be wants something that feels "special" rather than just "wild."

Who should probably skip it

If you're on a very tight budget, Marbella can feel stretched. And if the group only cares about big clubs and nightlife, Ibiza's party scene is simply bigger.

Barcelona: the city break that has everything

Barcelona is the wild card. It's not a resort town — it's a proper, genuinely world-class city. Which means the hen party you plan here can be completely different to any other group's Barcelona hen party.

You can spend a morning at a rooftop pool bar and an afternoon eating at a tiny restaurant in the Gothic Quarter where nobody speaks English and the food is extraordinary. You can do a private cooking class in the morning and end up at a rooftop club at 3am. Barcelona gives you the full range, and it rewards groups who want more than just sun and clubs.

The nightlife is excellent — Razzmatazz, Opium, the beach clubs at Port Olímpic. But Barcelona is also culture, architecture, food, shopping, art. If the bride-to-be has always wanted to see the Sagrada Família, nobody's going to drag her away from it just because it's a hen do.

Who it's right for

Groups with mixed interests. The culture lovers and the party animals both leave happy. Also great for shorter trips (a long weekend works perfectly) and groups flying in from different cities — Barcelona's connections are excellent.

Who should probably skip it

If the primary goal is lying in the sun and going clubbing with zero distractions, Barcelona might feel like too much city. It takes a bit more navigating than Ibiza or Marbella.

So which one is it?

Here's a rough guide, honestly:

Ibiza

For the biggest nights, the best clubs, and pool parties that go all day.

Budget: Medium to high

Energy: Maximum

Marbella

Sun, luxury, a beautiful villa, beach clubs with real glamour, and nightlife that doesn't need to last until sunrise.

Budget: Medium to high

Energy: Classy and fun

Barcelona

A full city experience — nightlife plus culture plus brilliant food — for groups with different interests.

Budget: Flexible

Energy: Varied and wonderful

The honest answer? All three are genuinely brilliant for a hen party in Spain. The one that's right for your group depends almost entirely on who's in the group and what the bride-to-be actually wants.
